Outer Banks Fishing Charters - Oregon Inlet

Situated between Hatteras Island and the Northern Outer Banks' border with Virginia, Oregon Inlet has been a major sportfishing destination for many years. Outer Banks vacationers staying at historic places like Manteo, Wanchese, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Southern Shores, Duck and Corolla can choose from a large fleet of professional sportfishing charter boats at any one of several Outer Banks marinas including Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, Outer Banks Marina, Wanchese Marina, Pirate's Cove Marina, Shallowbag Bay Marina, etc.

Most Oregon Inlet sportfishing charter boats specialize in full day (six pack) offshore charters for exotic species like mahi, yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, wahoo, blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish and giant bluefin tuna. A typical summer offshore deep sea run is southeast out of the inlet toward a location called "The Point" where the warmer Gulf Stream water and cool Labrador Currents come together to produce exceptional fishing. Within the last few years 3/4 day and full day charters have also become popular with combination of trolling and bottom fishing.

The area also has many local near shore charter boats specializing in half day charters. They will normally fish close to the inlet catching species like bluefish and spanish mackerel. During certain seasons cobia, striped bass, ribbonfish, false albacore, king mackerel and other seasonal species are often available. Because it is a short run from the various marinas to Oregon Inlet, half day AM or PM charters usually have a lot of family fishing time packed into a 4 to 5 hour trip. Near shore charters are great for the younger anglers and for less experienced family members to help them get used to fishing on a large boat.

The Outer Banks has been a sportfishing paradise for many years and anglers will have a selection from many large custom built sportfishing yachts, midsized fishing boats and then all the way down to less expensive charters on a small center console rig. Keep in mind that a smaller boat with no salon usually means no protection for your family from the weather and no private bathroom facilities other than a bucket. If it is just a couple of guys wanting a fast simple charter trip the less expensive part time boat option might be fine but if it is a family or a less experienced fishing group we strongly recommend one of our professionals with many years of experience at catching fish while keeping your family comfortable.

  • Half Day Near Shore Charter Trip lasts four hours and is normally fished just inside or outside of Oregon Inlet based on where the fish are being located. These trips are perfect for families with younger children and/or inexperienced adults. They can be run from 6am-10:30am, 11am-3:30pm or 4:00pm-8:00pm depending on our schedule. The species we can expect to catch on these trips range from bluefish, spanish mackerel, croakers and spot. Depending on the season, occasionally larger species like false albacore, cobia or redfish will be available.
  • 3/4 Day Near Shore Charter Trip is the same as the half day but we give the customers a few extra hours to enjoy their trip. On occasion the extra time allows us to swing out slightly further away from the inlet.
  • Full Day Near Shore lasts eight hours fishing our light gear for hard pulling amberjack, then trolling back towards the beach. While fishing back towards the beach, we often catch king mackerel, dolphin (mahi mahi), spanish mackerel, bluefish, red drum, cobia, etc..... These trips can be targeted for hard fighting/very tasty cobia, when they are running along our beach in the Spring and early Summer. Again the fish we encounter will depend on that day's conditions and what is available during your trip. Like all of our trips, we cannot predict the exact days certain species will be available but we often will adjust a charter to accommodate a customer's desires. Capt. Frank is always available to discuss the situation and make adjustments to help out.
  • Full Day Deep Sea Variety Trip is a real favorite with many of our guests each season. On this 10.5+ hour trip we will leave Wanchese Marina well before daylight and begin our fishing with light tackle for amberjack around structure. Then we put out our trolling spread fishing offshore to the deep waters of the Gulf Stream. While on our way offshore we "deep drop bottom fish" for extremely tasty blueline tilefish and black sea bass, (please note that we can only fish for these bottom fish when the Government regulated season is open). While trolling towards the deeper water we commonly catch dolphin (mahi mahi), king mackerel, wahoo, blackfin tuna and yellowfin tuna. Again the fish we encounter will depend on the day and what is available during your trip.
  • Full Day Deep Sea Trips lasting 10.5 hours will find us leaving the dock well before daylight, heading straight offshore for our Outer Banks Gulf Stream deep water pelagic species of fish. The fish generally targeted during these trips are yellowfin tuna, blackfin tuna, dolphin (mahi mahi), wahoo and possibly billfish, etc.... Again the fish we encounter will depend on the time of season and what is typically available at that time. (Note: We also have tackle rigged for deep jigging when conditions are acceptable).
  • Walk-On Makeup Charters for anglers that are unable to locate a full group of six anglers, please call Captain Frank and tell him you would like consider a makeup charter. He can add you to a makeup list and contact you once he has enough interested parties to get a charter trip scheduled.
